The 15-year-old Warrnambool College student took home the prized Jo Davis trophy after she performed a 10-minute speech before a Melbourne audience.
A public speaker since she was 11, the Warrnambool Rostrum club member admitted the win was unexpected. “It was a surprise, I thought all the other speeches were great,” Bree said. The award-winning entry was a speech on LGBTI hate crimes, in particular the 50 people killed in the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting.
“I enjoy public speaking because I like being able to express myself, to argue and voice my opinions. I don’t like being quiet.”
