Chatfield, who plays reserves for Dennington, polled strongly earlier on in the season, meaning he was propelled far into the lead early on in the count.
He sat on 16 votes at the end of round 13 – seven votes clear of Warren Attrill (Kolora-Noorat) and five clear of Matthew Wood (South Rovers) – but didn’t poll again until he scored a best-on-ground nomination in the final round of the season.
“I’ve hurt my hamstring about nine times for the season. I’ve only played 10 or 11 games and I’m stoked (to win the medal). It’s been a good year,” he said.
Wood said he was thrilled to share the award with Chatfield and Attrill.
Merrivale’s Matt Auld won out as the reserves leading goalkicker with 96 goals.
