Warrnambool police Sergeant Callum McKinnon said a passerby contacted triple zero at 10.20pm Friday after seeing the Holden Captiva ablaze in Clarke Street.
Camperdown Country Fire Authority volunteers and the Cobden brigade attended and put out the fire.
Sergeant McKinnon said the car was gutted.
He said the fire was concentrated in the rear section of the vehicle but it would be an insurance write-off.
Anyone with information about the fire is requested to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Camperdown CFA captain Danny Gordon said the late model four-wheel-drive Captiva was well alight in a driveway when firefighters arrived.
"We were more worried about the adjoining car port and another vehicle parked nearby," he said.
"Luckily there was a westerly wind blowing and that took the heat and smoke away. The vehicle was completely burnt out," he said.
