The Eels will this season launch a female development program in a bid to draw more girls to the sport, but it will first and foremost centre around health and fitness for female athletes.
Program coordinator Luke Howlett said the club would look to enter a team in the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s under 16 girls competition.
“Our women’s side will focus mainly on training but there will hopefully be a couple of exhibition games. We know other clubs are keen to do what we’re doing and hopefully in time there is a women’s league,” he said.
“We find once our girls get playing, it removes the daunting side of it and they’re happy to run out with the boys.” Woodford’s Chloe McKenzie and Grace Farrer will head a group of young mentors in the program.
