Kangaroos hop into Hampden league

THE Hamilton Kangaroos Football Netball Club is the name of the Hampden league's newest side.

The club, born out of a merger between long-time arch rivals Hamilton and Hamilton Imperials, has just been announced.

SED Consulting manager Lachy Patterson, who has been managing the merger, said the name was chosen after a vote of about 300 Hamilton and Imperials members on Wednesday night.

They had a choice between Hamilton or Hamilton United as the side's name with either the Kangaroos, Power or Hawks moniker and jumper colours.

Patterson said the interim board had based its decision to go with Hamilton Kangaroos on the votes tallied.

“The fact Hamilton was the preferred precursor to Kangaroos is really exciting, it tells us that people realise this is about a new team that represents our town and the place we live," Patterson said.

"It also shows that the people of Hamilton and surrounds are keen to move on and make a fresh start.

“The Kangaroos concept as whole won almost half of the vote and was a clear cut winner. I think people saw the synergy between our area and the name, its colours and possibly some tangible relationship benefits that a link with North Melbourne could provide."
