Louise Brown, one of the leading drivers behind the push, said about 30 people attended a positive open forum at the Arc on Friday night.
Brown will now hold a secondary meeting with interested parties to form a proposal to hand to the association’s committee.
The former WNBL-listed guard said it was hoped it would then be forwarded to the Big V for acceptance into the 2017 competition.
“Obviously this is just the start,” she said.
“There are a lot of steps to go through. The next course of action is I am going to contact the people who were there and have a small gathering to put forward ideas and give to the committee.
“They need to know the name of potential players, staff and people who are willing to help out on game day.
“We need a lot more help if we are going to have three teams (in the Big V).
“We need a couple of people to join the committee – that’s the only thing I haven’t had a lot of interest in yet.
“I have people who want to help on game day, setting up the stadium and working in the canteen.”
Brown is confident the Big V would accept a Mermaids’ nomination after a three-year hiatus. She said former WNBL-calibre guard Nicole Hunt and the US college-experienced Maddy White, two Warrnambool-raised players, had committed, as had championship-winning veteran Renee Tuck.
“Once they (the Big V) see those names they’ll say we’re division one,” Brown said.
