The annual awards recognise Australia's live performance industry and covers theatre, music, comedy, cabaret, opera, and dance, with winners announced on Monday at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre.
Ballard won the comedy section ahead of 2013 winner Julia Morris, Zoe Coombs Marr and The Doug Anthony All Stars. He was nominated for his latest show The World Keeps Happening, which toured Australia earlier this year.
Ballard joins an illustrious list of comedians with previous winners of the Helpmann Award for comedy including Tim Minchin, Adam Hills, The Umbilical Brothers, Wil Anderson, Denise Scott, Sam Simmons, and Judith Lucy.
Ballard is filming a TV show due to air later this year and will perform at Just For Laughs in Montreal and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The former Brauer College student was nominated for best newcomer at last year’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
