A group of five people all completing associate degrees of arts – which serve as pathways into degrees – shared their stories and will show people around campus on the day.
Nigerian-born student Oluwabusola Jethro said his study opportunity brought him a step closer to fulfilling his dream of working in the medical field.
Mr Jethro hopes to study a diploma of paramedical science in 2017.
“When I was growing up my plan was to be in the medical line,” he said.
“My family wanted me to be an engineer, but when I came to Australia I was able to return to my initial desire.”
Students such as Matthew Lanyon said they probably would not have gone to university if the campus had not been there.
“I had no intentions of doing university,” Mr Lanyon said.
“I suffered a workplace injury that changed my direction.”
Mr Lanyon had been working and raising children while completing the course. He hoped it would lead to a law/business degree.
“There have been hiccups given my age and getting back into study, but the staff are amazing and supportive,” he said.
Trent Holland said he would not have been able to go to university and pursue his love of writing without the local campus.
Mr Holland spent several years doing farm work and now wants to go on and complete a bachelor of arts degree majoring in journalism.
“I’ve always loved writing, and it’s helped me solidify that that’s what I want to do,” he said.
Second-year student Michelle Lane, who needed to be able to study near her family, wants to complete a bachelor of health science.
“Studying here is challenging and I think differently now,” Ms Lane said.
Associate degrees are designed to support students in their university study, strengthening writing and communication skills, critical thinking, digital literacy and teamwork.
The Regional Tertiary Advisory Group has encouraged prospective students to attend the Open Day as it works on a strategic vision for the future of the campus.
