Aside from a tan and a comprehensive journal of their experience, many gained a greater respect and deeper understanding of the path they have mapped for themselves.
“Many described the experience as life-changing and humbling,” course co-ordinator Wendy Lever said.
“The Kimberleys are Australia’s suicide and family violence capital, so it was eye-opening.”
As part of their Diploma of Community Services, the 11 final-year students participated in a variety of clinical roles throughout the Kimberley region including drug and alcohol rehabilitation, mental health services, a women’s refuge, neighbourhood house and a homeless organisation.
Ms Lever said the trip was both cultural and voluntary.
“The students cooked and prepared 2400 meals over the three-week period, including 750 for homeless,” Ms Lever said.
