Detective Senior Constable Wayne Ryan, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said three sheds were broken into overnight last Thursday and Friday in Mickle Crescent, Hyland Street and Raglan Parade.
He said stolen items were valued at about $1000 including drills, a mower, a garden trimmer, tools and wetsuits.
"Offenders are targeting unlocked sheds and garages and stealing items, particularly tools, which can be carried away," he said.
"We're requesting residents secure items of value in storage. It's not the 1960s and 70s and people need to be aware of their personal security and securing their property."
Detective Senior Constable Ryan said a simple padlock could deter thieves.
"We would also request that people be aware of who is in their street. If you see an unusual vehicle or someone acting suspicious, take down a registration plate number and make a call to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000," he said.
"It's all about people looking out for each other. That's the best way for communities to remain safe and secure - a bit of a neighbourhood watch approach," he said.
