Sergeant Andrew Raven, of Warrnambool police, said officers were now on their way to the property to investigate.
“It looks like it’s just been dumped out there,” he said.
EARLIER: Thieves have stolen a trailer filled with footy gear for Saturday’s junior games from the Dennington Football Club oval.
Constable Aaron Toulmin, of Warrnambool police, said the fully enclosed 7x4-foot box trailer was stolen between 5pm Friday night and 8am Saturday morning.
The trailer is painted rad with a sticker on the back that says ‘Dennington’ and has a registration number P19810.
Constable Toulmin said the trailer was locked up and the thieves cut the lock to tow it away.
He said the trailer was used to store football jumpers, drink bottles, umpire flags and other football gear for today’s junior games.
Anyone with information is asked to call Warrnambool police or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
Club president Clinton Hall said the trailer had been packed on Friday night in preparation for today’s away game at Panmure, which was due to kick off about 11am.
Hall said the trailer was chained to a pole near the social rooms, something that they had been doing for years.
“We got there today and it was gone. It’s disappointing really,” he said.
“It was just a tradies trailer with a top on it and it was all locked up, and they’ve obviously come and thought there was tools in it.
“They just don’t care. It’s just money.
“We had the under 14s jumpers in there, all the tape and stretcher and those sorts of things that we take to games.”
At short notice, the under 14s were asked to bring an AFL jumper to play in on Saturday, and luckily the under 12s had taken their jumpers homes.
However, by game time they had managed to scrape together enough old footy guernseys.
Hall estimated the trailer and gear would cost about $5000 to replace.
“We’re obviously insured. It’s just the inconvenience of it. If it was a home game, we wouldn’t really care because we wouldn’t have packed the trailer,” he said.
“Hopefully it turns up.”
Sergeant Andrew Raven, of Warrnambool police, later said witnesses had reported seeing the trailer in the Dennington supermarket car park about 11pm Friday night.
