Excavators began work this week to unclog Reedy Creek, which is believed to be a key waterway that would help minimise damage in a once-in-a-century flood.
Moyne Shire Council has been in discussions with the landowner and the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment for over a decade and voted last month to “consider enforcement action to progress works” after concerned ratepayer Gray Wilson addressed the council for the “fourth or fifth time” on the matter.
The council’s manager of works and engineering Leah Johnston said the council is paying for the works being undertaken this week after reaching an agreement with the landowner.
“It’s a real positive to be able to get these works done,” Ms Johnston said.
