Aaron Tebble, 23, of Lyons Street, Terang, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to one charge of theft.
He was convicted, fined $1200 and was ordered to pay back the $2000.
Police said that mid last year Tebble was working at a Mortlake wool buying business.
On Friday, July 24, there was $8100 in the cash tin, Tebble took $2000 to used most of it to catch up with the repayments on a loan.
The following Monday the business manager realised the money was missing, confronted Tebble, who denied he stole the cash and he claimed $500 he had was from gambling wins at the weekend.
That proved to be false and on the urging of his mother Tebble admitted taking the $2000.
He used $1500 to help get his loan back on track and kept $500 cash.
When interviewed by police, Tebble said it as a “brain fade” and he was very sorry.
Defence counsel Xavier Farrelly said the manager of the business was a family friend which made the situation even worse.
He said that Tebble's car loan had blown out from $13,000 to $22,000, but Tebble's mother was now helping her son with his finances.
Magistrate John Lesser said Tebble had breached a sacred trust and it may be difficult for the defendant to find employment in future.
