V/Line chief Gary Liddle said work was progressing well to clear the site of last Wednesday’s level crossing incident.
Two cranes were being used to lift the carriages and locomotive so work can begin on the damaged track.
“Our crews have started the process of lifting the carriages and locomotive onto a temporary track that we’ve installed alongside the main Warrnambool line,” he said.
That work was expected to be completed by Sunday evening and the train would return to Melbourne for inspection and repairs.
Mr Liddle said V/Line was also writing to passengers involved in the crash.
“We’re letting customers know about reimbursement and other assistance, including counselling services, that’s available through the Transport Accident Commission,” he said.
Trains on the Warrnambool line have been replaced by buses. Trains from Southern Cross Station connect with coaches at Geelong. Bus services towards Melbourne from Warrnambool line stations terminate at Southern Cross.
