Storm clouds gather over City Memorial Bowls Club as City Memorial Green takes on Port Fairy Gold in the opening WDBD Tuesday pennant round.
WARRNAMBOOL Gold opened its Warrnambool District Bowls Division (WDBD) Tuesday pennant division one season with a convincing win.
It won all three rinks as it demolished City Memorial Pink, 104-50.
In her first game as skipper Brenda Hawker led her rink to a 50-7 win.
"I don't know anyone who has got that high," Hawker said, referring to Gold's high score.
Hawker praised her teammates Lorraine Shaw, Jane Rea and Dianne Mugavin for gelling and playing well in tough conditions. Port Fairy Gold defeated City Memorial Green 80-54 to start its season on a winning note. It won two of the rinks on offer.
For Port Fairy Green, Gill Phillips' team was too strong for Karina Ellery's combination, winning 23-14, and Pauline Burleigh's team downed Jan Norton's 34-16.
In the tightest game of the day, City Memorial Gold's Dorothy Gleeson led her team to a 24-23 win against Kay Miller's team.
Ellery said City Memorial Green "battled".
"It was a very tough day," she said. "We did not play terribly well and the others played better than us."
Ellery praised Gleeson for her strong first-up effort. "It was Dorothy's first time skipping in pennant and they were down and did a great job to win it on the last bowl," she said.
"My rink was seven-all early and doing a great job and then the wheels fell off."
City Memorial Gold won a rain-affected match against Timboon, 83-42.
Sixty-four ends were played before the game was called off. For a result to count, 50 ends must be completed.
Terang had a 16-shot win against Warrnambool Blue, 72-56. It won two of the three rinks.
