Early voting centres were open in Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland.
The bulk of the early votes were cast in Warrnambool, with 14,243 recorded there prior to election day.
At the 2013 federal election, close to 13,000 people cast an early vote, while at the 2010 federal election, just 6500 did so. At a national level, close to three million people voted early and more than one million people completed postal votes.
Australian Electoral Commission counted the early votes at polling stations across the country on election night.
Pre polling has become popular in recent elections with 50 per cent of votes in last October’s state by-election for the Warrnambool-based seat of South West Coast lodged before the election day
