Nick Shirrefs, a former Brauer College student, has written Origin – A Cosmic Voyage.
It is the Horsham College music teacher’s first symphony.
The piece will be performed by the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in Mt Gambier on Saturday and at the Naracoorte Town Hall on Sunday.
Origin – A Cosmic Voyage is part of a program that will also feature works by Grieg and Massenet, songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera, and a performance by prominent pianist Kenji Fujimura.
The conductor will Hamilton’s Angus Christie.
Christie was also wielding the baton earlier this year when the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra premiered another of Shirrefs’ compositions – a piece titled Music For Sailing Ships.
The Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra formed in 2013.
