Noorat Primary School’s gutsy food challenge

ALL 27 pupils at Noorat Primary School will be getting their two fruit and four vegetables every day this week.

The school is taking part in the Gutsy Challenge which is a fund-raiser for gastro-intestinal (GI) cancer research.

Parents association president Jane Wyss said parents had volunteered to cook with and prepare morning tea and lunch for the pupils.

“The kids are learning about the importance of fresh produce and good nutrition,” she said.

“They’re really excited. We’ll be making hummus, tabouli, fruit kebabs and salads.”

Ms Wyss said the school and parents recognised the importance of instilling healthy eating from an early age.

“If they start from an early age and at home it’s something we hope they’ll carry into their adult life.”

Parents and grandparents at the close knit school have also established vegetable and herb gardens.

Next week the children will be dining on fruit and vegetables donated by Greavesy’s Fruit N Veg in Terang.

Ms Wyss said the donation by Jason and Cassie Greaves was above and beyond her expectations.

The Gutsy Challenge, to eat two fruit and four vegetables every day for a week, runs from March to November and is the largest national healthy eating program for Australian children.

GI cancer is the most common form of cancer, which kills 26 Australians every day. GI cancers form inside the gastro-intestinal tract and include bowel, liver, gall bladder, pancreatic and stomach cancer.

The school will hold a fund-raiser on Friday with pupils encouraged to dress up as their favourite fruit or vegetable.
