NBN moves into new areas over the next year

THE Illawarra, Taree and Mudgee will have access to the national broadband network in the next years as part of the next phase of the $37billion network's development.

The network's coverage in Homebush and Blacktown is also to be extended.

The Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, will today announce construction for 165,800 homes and businesses around Australia with 44,700 homes and businesses in NSW.

NBN Co will release new construction maps that cover 40 different sites across the country, with 17 in NSW including at Coffs Harbour, Penrith and Richmond. And, for the first time, properties in Wollongong, Dapto, Taree and Mudgee will have access.

It takes an average of a year from the start of construction to the time when householders and business owners can order national broadband network retail services from phone or internet providers.

By mid 2015, more than a million premises across the state and 3.5million premises nationwide will either have access or have access under construction, NBN Co said.

"The release of these maps shows that the NBN rollout is ramping up across Australia, with NBN Co on track to meet its target of having construction commenced or completed for 758,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year," Senator Conroy said.

In August, the cost of the national broadband network, the nation's biggest infrastructure project, was revealed to have increased $2.9billion over the next 10 years with its deadline pushed back six months, to June 2021, because of higher labour costs, longer distances and future upgrades to equipment.
