Nothing separates Purnim and Wangoom

PURNIM and Wangoom played out a dramatic tie in Grassmere Cricket Association’s opening round yesterday.

Needing one run to win off the final ball, Rooster Nick Sinclair found himself run out.

Purnim wicketkeeper Glenn Mansbridge dismissed the non-striker as Wangoom played for the win.

Wangoom stand-in captain Nick Kermond said it was a top-quality game.

“Aaron Peterson batted well for Purnim and once we got him out, we pegged them back,” he said.

“We were 3-12 and then a 99-run partnership between Nick Sinclair and Chris Rollo got us back in it.”

Peterson made 82 as Purnim recorded 9-144.

The skipper’s knock included three sixes and four fours and was part of an 80-run third-wicket partnership with Anthony Eccles, who chimed in with 15.

Heath Anderson (3-33) and Jarrod King (2-17) did the job with the ball for Wangoom.

Hawkesdale knocked off Panmure Pups to start its Grassmere Cricket Association season on a winning note yesterday.

The Cats’ six-wicket win was on the back of James North’s all-round effort.

North snared 3-13 as the Pups were dismissed for 94. He also contributed 39 with the bat.

“James North played today because he was back home from Bendigo and we won’t have him for too many games,” Hawkesdale skipper Murray Habel said.

Other Cats to wield their influence were Brad Smith, who took 4-11, and Tim Huglin, who made 27 runs at the top of the order.

Killarney proved too good for Yambuk, winning by three wickets.

Killarney’s Gary Vanstone’s knock of 52 not out was the highlight.

Jethro Searle collected 4-19 to be the best of the Yambuk bowlers.

Panmure Bulldogs claimed a 32-run win against Grassmere.

The Bulldogs made 7-121, with Paul Rea (40) and James McKinnon (31) putting on a 73-run fifth-wicket partnership.

Brayden Hotker (3-14) and Paul Kelson (2-7) were Grassmere’s most effective bowlers.

Grassmere was bundled out for 89.
