Man killed in quad bike crash

A 58-YEAR-old man died in a quad bike accident in the state's north-east yesterday evening.

Police said the man was riding along Old Weir Road in Murchison, about 35 kilometres south of Shepparton, when he lost control of the bike when the road surface changed from bitumen to gravel.

A police spokeswoman said the quad bike was towing a trailer, which jack-knifed and caused the bike to flip over, trapping the 58-year-old underneath.

The man, a local from Murchison, was by himself at the time of the accident and died at the scene.

The death brings the state's road toll to 222 this year, and is the 11th death on a country road in October.

Other fatal accidents in country areas have occurred in Violet Town, Kamarooka, Balliang East, Strathewen, Drysdale, Homewood, Tatura, Sandon and Kawarren.
