Five powered sites in Southcombe Park Caravan Park will make way for the cricket centre, which Port Fairy Cricket Club aims to have up and running by September.
The cricket club has been seeking to build the facility to make up for a lack of training facilities over the five-week period when the Port Fairy Folk Festival takes over Southcombe Park.
The location of the centre has been a sticking point, but Moyne Shire believes it has reached an agreement that appeases all users groups.
Club president Damian Gleeson said it was wonderful news.
“It’s been a long drawn-out process,” he said.
“We want to thank council for their support and the way they’ve worked to ensure all parties are happy with the outcome. The cricket club understands the significance of the folk festival in this town and we willingly give up our facilities to them for five weeks of the year, but we don’t have a training base during that time.”
The inability to train or host games in Port Fairy during that time causes the club to suffer a financial loss, but Mr Gleeson said the new centre would make up for that somewhat.
He said that following final financial negotiations this week, the shed that makes up the facility could be ordered and delivered in approximately six weeks, with construction expected to begin in July.
A location that wouldn’t have required the loss of powered sites in the caravan park was found to be unsuitable after it was discovered the location of “a sewer line ... meant powering the facility would be difficult”, a council spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the five powered sites that will make way for the centre will be “relocated at an approximate cost of $15,000”.
”Caravan park management will work on this over the winter months so the sites will be ready in time for the busy summer season,” the spokesperson said.
