Jesse Brad Barrow, 19, of King Street, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to careless driving.
He was convicted and placed on a 12-month bond.
Police alleged that at 10.45pm on September 22 Barrow was heading west along Artillery Crescent when he accelerated, lost control and crashed into a light pole on the south-east side of a roundabout.
The light pole was ripped out and the vehicle was tangled up with electrical cable.
Fire brigade officers attended and warned those in attendance not to touch anything for fear of an electric shock.
The owner of the vehicle, who was a passenger in the car, and her 13-year-old son were not injured.
The car was extensively damaged and had to be towed from the accident scene.
Barrow claimed there was a major steering component failure, but there was no evidence to support his claim.
He admitted driving too fast and being inexperienced.
