Deakin University Poker Club members took to the tables at The Loft yesterday for the club’s “mini-main” event – a mid-year tournament that saw more than 20 players grinding it out over six or seven hours for a slice of a $620 prize pool.
Club president Harry Vines said the club was only in its second year but was riding the wave of poker popularity.
“You can play (competition) poker four nights a week in Warrnambool,” he said.
“Our club is a mix of uni students and non-uni students. We started last year with just seven people who knew how to play poker. You see people come and try it and if they have any joy you see them back next week.”
