Saturday was always going to be a tough outing for the injury-depleted South Rovers, but few would’ve seen the 70-24 scoreline coming as the Dogs again showcased their versatility.
Dennington coach Katie Burt was pleased positional changes at half-time showed her team’s second and third options could be just as effective as their first.
“We changed two girls into positions that I think made a real difference,” she said.
“It was 36-14 at half-time, so it gave us an opportunity (to move players around).
“I brought Lani Keane into goal attack and put Melissa Burt into goal keeper.
“Both girls really love playing at both ends; they were stoked to get a half in the other position they love.”
The Dogs also switched midcourters Krystal Day and Alyssa Johnson as they trialed different combinations.
South Rovers went into the match without Karis Claridge and Sinaed Finck, while coach Lisa Pender and Breanna Wastel were below full fitness heading.
Meanwhile, Merrivale saw off a strong challenge from Kolora-Noorat to keep its unbeaten start to the season alive, winning 44-38.
Barely anything separated the sides for most of the match, with the lead chopping and changing.
Kolora-Noorat led by three goals at quarter-time, before Merrivale levelled the ledger on 21-all by half-time and led by a goal heading into the final quarter.
The Tigers really hit their straps in the last, shooting 13 goals to eight to take the win.
“It was great to have a nice game. It was nice and competitive, a clean game and just really nice to watch,” Merrivale coach Jacqui McDonald said.
“They responded really well (to the pressure), they’re backing each other up on court, they talk really well and they just really put their all into it. Our team is quite set now … and when we do make the changes, they just slot straight in.”
Kolora-Noorat coach Faye Clarke said she was pleased her side had been with able to keep up with the ladder leaders until the last few minutes of the game.
“We’re happy with the way we played; we probably just let them get into our heads a little bit and made a few errors and that was probably the difference in the end.”
