The Dogs made their intentions clear from the outset, holding the Lions scoreless in the opening term while slotting through 5.4 to open up a comfortable lead.
“No one was happy with the brand of football we played against East Warrnambool – we could’ve quite easily lost that game – it was a good wake up call for everyone,” Dennington coach Darcy Lewis said.
“We were really switched on. It started with the midfield, they won a lot of clearances – Justin Wallace was absolutely brilliant in the ruck all day.”
The Dogs’ forward structure improved significantly from recent outings, led by another five-goal haul from Chris Keilar, while Mark Murphy played higher up the ground and still produced four goals.
“It was one of the best games he’s played for us … he had a lot of the football,” Lewis said.
The back line was practically impassable at times, with just five goals scored against the Dogs all day.
Lewis said many Dogs whose form had waned over recents weeks worked themselves back into good form in what was an impressive team effort.
Braden Hotker was one of the Lions’ best and their primary scorer, booting four of the team’s goals.
On-baller Nathan Murphy continued his sensational season with another best on ground performance for South Rovers – named the Lions’ best for the fifth time.
