Police said the man was believed to be a resident of the Redesdale property and an arson chemist was travelling up to investigate the fire.
The cause has not been determined and at this stage the fatal blaze is not being treated as suspicious.
A Country Fire Authority spokesman said firefighters were called to the North Redesdale Road bungalow about 4.10am Saturday.
He said the occupant awoke and found his bungalow was on fire.
"Unfortunately firefighters found the male occupant inside has deceased," the spokesman said.
Police and ambulance were called to the scene. There were no other occupants inside the property.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, but the building collapsed and the bungalow was destroyed.
