The centenary celebrations drew 20,000 people who lined the CBD streets to watch a mile-long procession of 30 floats on March 27, which was declared a public holiday.
We’re not sure if this picture is of one of the floats or whether the old fella riding the penny farthing was an additional extra in the 30-float parade, but this snap from former Standard photographer David Ferguson captures a small part of the activity on that momentous day. It is part of a collection Mr Ferguson’s family have donated to the Warrnambool & District Historical Society.
Eagle-eyed readers will notice the Coles building still stands (it now house Katies and OPSM) and you can still see the windows above verandah level.
