Gray will make his Rebels debut as their 23rd man against Eastern Ranges at Box Hill on Saturday.
His call-up comes a week after a solid performance for the Bottle Greens’ under 19 team against Ovens and Murray. Portland coach Luke Crane said Gray had attributes to play at a higher level.
“He is a real smooth mover, runs well, is clean with the footy, has beautiful disposal and makes good decisions,” he said.
“For a 17-year-old kid out of juniors, he’s stepped up to senior footy well. He’s got a bit of versatility. We’ve played him on a wing and a bit in the midfield and forward but I reckon he could play defence too.”
Gray joins Tiger teammates Jamaine Jones, fresh from a best-on-ground effort for Hampden’s senior side, and Lochie Huppatz in the Rebels’ line-up.
