The study was initiated by the Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) after concerns were raised that a lack of price information along the beef value chain was affecting marketing and investment decisions in the industry.
The MLA study said mandatory price reporting in the United States had achieved show small but tangible, producer benefits.
The study said an examination of differences between the US and Australian cattle and beef industries lead to the conclusion that benefits from improved price transparency in Australia would likely be greater than in the US.
The study said if the issue was to be pursued, the question likely to be confronted was whether government intervention would be needed to bring in mandatory price reporting or whether industry would implement the measures itself.
