Not to be outdone is Warrnambool filmmaking pair The McAnulty Brothers, who returned to the beaches of the south-west to shoot Surf Trash II.
Sean and James McAnulty shot the original short film over two weeks in 2007 as part of a filmmaking course, but James said the sequel was shot for the fun of it over numerous weekends.
The original was an homage to the trashy Z-grade straight-to-video releases of the ‘80s and ‘90s, but dealt with the real-world theme of surfing localism.
Based on an idea of Sean’s, the sequel sees the violent local surfers waging war against encroaching property developers.
Starring a swag of familiar local faces (although sadly Moyne Shire councillor Jim Doukas will not be reprising his role from the original), the film will be shown back-to-back with its predecessor at an informal film night to be held at The Loft in Warrnambool from 6.30pm on Saturday.
James said the “unofficial film festival” would also feature short films by other local directors including Alex McLaren, Colleen Hughson, James Russell, Emily Bissland, Shannon Mast, Mark Jackman, Stacey Chillcott, Steve Miller, and Jacob Colliver.
The not-for-profit nature of the night meant people could see films ordinarily excluded from official film festivals for various reasons such as music licensing issues.
