Edgewood missed the start but scooted along the rail to dive through and snatch a win in the dying stages of the BM70 handicap 1400m.

The $17 chance won by a half-length over Decoupez ($51) with the well fancied Better Land ($3.60) another length away third.

Macmillan moved from Warrnambool 14 years ago and is now based at Strathalbyn in South Australia.

He studied aquatic science at Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus and gained a degree in animal science.

Macmillan competed in four Grand Annuals, finishing with a third, two fourths and a fifth.

He said the highlights of his jumps riding career was representing Australia against England and Ireland in 1998.

"I knew he was good enough," he said of Edgewood.

"It was a a gun of a ride. That's why Damien Oliver is the best jockey in Australia. We've put a lot of work into the horse. It could be a big night ahead," he said.

Oliver said Edgewood was good enough to take the opportunities as they presented themselves.

"When the gaps came he took them, normally in races the gaps come and horses can't take the gaps," he said.
