Corangamite Shire and South West TAFE have joined forces to host the Starting a Bed and Breakfast or Farmstay workshop on Wednesday, May 11 in Cobden.
The shire’s economic development officer Sara Napier said the program was developed to provide an overview what property owners needed to know when setting up an accommodation business from home.
“The workshop will include presentations from experienced bed and breakfast operators, as well as provide an overview of the tourism industry in the region, identify the business fundamentals for running an accommodation business and provide some next steps for people who want to start a business,” she said.
Mrs Napier said a Tourism Opportunities Study commissioned in 2010 showed a need for private-sector investment in accommodation, particularly high-end accommodation and boutique bed and breakfasts.
Corangamite Shire attracts 2.6 million visitors annually, with only 218,000 staying in paid accommodation. Mrs Napier said this was due in a large part to tourism product offering, including availability of preferred accommodation types.
Experienced tourism industry consultant Rachel Donovan, from Insight Communications, will run the Cobden workshop.
“Ms Donovan has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, with experience in strategy development, training and marketing and we are very pleased to have her share her breadth of knowledge with our attendees,” Mrs Napier said.
