The exciting youngster earned an immediate call-up to TAC Cup side North Ballarat Rebels following his four-goal, best-on-ground performance against Warrnambool, but suffered a minor hamstring injury and was forced to sit out last week.
Eagles co-coach Brendan Murfett said Wason’s return comes at a good time for the Eagles, who want to rotate their promising teenagers through senior and junior ranks this season.
Jye O’Brien is set to have a rest from the seniors, after a promising start playing in the forward line and pinch-hitting in the ruck.
“(Wason) will come back in and fill that forward line area, probably, for us,” Murfett said.
“He’s put his hand up that he’s ready to go.
“Hopefully he can play as well as he did in round one.”
Josh Corbett – who has kicked 11 goals in two games – was named as an emergency, but is in strong contention for a match with Werribee’s VFL development league team, named on the Tigers’ extended bench.
“We had to send his stats to them – obviously it read pretty well,” Murfett said.
Portland has made two changes to the side which was pipped at the post by Hamilton Kangaroos in an Anzac Day thriller on Monday.
The Tigers have omitted Jordan Bliss and Connor Peters, bringing in Sam Davis and Trent Johnston.
Portland coach Luke Crane said his side was trying to forget about Monday’s loss after Hamilton Kangaroos’ big comeback, but was keen to avoid similar fadeouts in future.
With the sting of defeat still fresh in their minds, the Tigers will be keen to redeem themselves, but face a tough prospect in the form side of the competition.
“It’s tough playing North Warrnambool Eagles after a five-day break, it’s not going to be an easy task,” Crane said.
“Our work rate, especially in the second half, and obviously our forward entries and ability to score (were lacking).”
Warrnambool will be without Andrew McCarthy for its match against Camperdown after he injured his hamstring in last Saturday’s win over Koroit.
In other selection news, Koroit premiership player Sam Dobson may make his VFL debut on Sunday after being named on Geelong’s extended bench for its clash with Coburg Lions.
