The three winning schools – Warrnambool East Primary School, Brauer College and Emmanuel College – will now compete in the state finals. Warrnambool College’s Daniel Barker won best player overall.
The competitors ranged from grade four to year 12, and close to ten schools from the south-west region were involved.
Each student played seven games of chess lasting about 15 minutes each.
Brauer College teacher Janet Ferguson said there was a “buzz in the room” throughout the day.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for children who have an interest in chess to get together,” she said.
“It was a very social and fun day.”
The event was organised through Chess Kids Victoria.
