Organisers hope to attract more than 200 people for the footballers' boxing fund-raiser.
AN AMATEUR boxing event that raises money for south-west Victorian football clubs will return to Warrnambool this month.
The South West Club Contender will put 10 boxers to the test at St Pius X Primary School on October 20.
Organisers hope more than 200 people will be ringside as footballers from four Warrnambool and District league clubs test their developing skills.
Bang Bang Entertainment, run by former Warrnambool men Luke Mugavin and Damian “Butch” Smith, is behind the event which ran for the first time last year.
Mugavin said the 2012 South West Club Contender had attracted more boxers but from fewer clubs.
At least nine boxers have signed up for the challenge, up from eight last year, but they represent four clubs.
Mugavin said he was “surprised” with how popular the inaugural event was.
“We’re both former Warrnambool people, Butch and I, and we’ve run them up in Queensland with a lot of success,” he said.
“It was Derby Day last year but even given that we got over 300 people.
Dennington and East Warrnambool will have the strongest representation.
Rodney Sumner, Ashley Sumner and Jayden Millet will line up for the Bombers.
Sam Lewis, the brother of last year’s champion Darcy Lewis, headlines the Dogs’ boxers, which also include Paul Young, Jed Greene and Matt Brauman.
Chris Walters will represent Panmure and David Timewell dons the gloves for Russells Creek. Other boxers were also in the pipeline.
Mugavin said the contenders trained at Mal’s Gym for about six weeks.
