A WARRNAMBOOL man who went on a drunken rampage in Mortlake after not being able to see his children over Christmas and smashed windows worth $8275.66 has been placed on a corrections order.
Jason Quinton, 37, of McGregors Road, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court this week to four counts of causing damage and two charges of failing to answer bail. On December 27, 2010, Quinton was upset he could not see his children over Christmas. He consumed five litres of wine and had a disagreement with his sister.
Quinton then walked down Dunlop Street, picked up a brick and threw it, breaking a butcher’s shop window. He then grabbed the same brick and cracked two more windows. A second brick was used to smash a library window. Quinton then used a chair to break three windows at a laundromat. At the BP service station, he tampered with gas and petrol bowsers before throwing a bottle against the glass door.
He handed himself in to police the next day and admitted causing the damage.
Quinton then twice failed to appear on bail in court and warrants were issued for his arrest. Defence counsel Xavier Farrelly said his client was suffering anxiety and depression at the time of the offences.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt said he doubted the compensation would ever be paid but he decided that Quinton needed to be placed on a community corrections order.
Quinton was convicted, fined $500, placed on a 12-month CCO with conditions he do 100 hours’ work and undertake assessment and treatment for alcohol and mental health issues.
He also received a one-month jail sentence which was suspended for two years and was ordered to pay $8275.66 compensation.
