Detectives said three firearms and a chainsaw had been stolen from the Glenthompson farm last week.
AMMUNITION for two unique firearms stolen in Glenthompson could lead police detectives to the thieves.
Detective Sergeant Mark James, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said a farm property two kilometres west of Glenthompson off the Glenelg Highway was burgled last Thursday afternoon or night.
Three firearms and a Stihl farmboss chainsaw were stolen from the farm after access was gained to a gun safe in a shed.
"Two 20 gauge shotguns were stolen, an under and over shotgun and a single barrel shotgun as well as a centerfire .22 hornet," Sergeant James said.
"The 20 gauge shotguns are more common in the United Kingdom and the United States, they have a smaller diameter barrel. They are bigger than a 410 but smaller than a 12 gauge."
Sergeant James said it was difficult to get ammunition for the 20 gauge shotguns and no ammunition was stolen with the guns.
"Anyone who had the guns and wanted to use them would have to ask around to get ammunition," he said.
"We are asking for anyone in shooting circles who hears someone asking about 20 gauge ammunition to get in contact with the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
Sergeant James said the theft continues a spate of similar gun-targeted burglaries across the south-west in the past 18 months.
"It's timely to remind farmers to make sure their guns are secured and keys to gun safes put in a secure place," he said.
"Farms are generally isolated and farmers can be less than satisfactory with storage of their firearms and in particularly storage of their keys to gun safes. Keys need to be completely secured," he said.
