Matthew Graham, 30, of Kenneth Lane, Glenormiston, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to more than 30 offences, including multiple counts involving burglary, thefts, obtaining property by deception, weapons, bail and intervention orders and driving offences.
Magistrate John Lesser decided the 23 days Graham had spent in custody on remand was not enough of a penalty but extra prison time should be followed by a corrections order.
Graham was jailed for four months, minus the 23 days held on remand, which will be followed by a 15-month corrections order involving 100 hours unpaid community work.
He was also fined $1800 on driving charges and lost his licence for 14 months.
Defence counsel Amanda Chambers said her client admitted to past court appearances and Graham explained in a letter to the court he hated being in jail.
She said the reason behind the offending was a regular tale heard in court - ice use, which led to Graham's life spinning out of control after he suffered a workplace back injury.
Ms Chambers said Graham had been interstate over the Christmas period but he returned to Victoria in early January and was involved in the burglaries and thefts under the influence of ice.
She asked that Graham be sentenced to time served and a community corrections order but requested any additional jail time be kept to a minimum.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Nathan Brown said 23 days in jail for such a significant crime spree was simply not enough time.
Detective Sergeant Chris Asenjo, of the Warrnambool police divisional response unit, previously told court officers had executed a search warrant at a Glenormiston property in February.
Inside bags hidden up trees were bright red shoes and other distinctive clothing similar to that seen in security camera footage at crime scenes, a calico bag from a landfill site that was repeatedly broken into, as well as an angle grinder, extendable baton, double-bladed machete, ammunition and paperwork in Graham's name.
There was as also an iPod hooked up to social website Facebook involving the sale of a stolen vehicle.
Police said Graham was caught speeding at Stawell (121km/h) in June last year and he tested positive to driving under the influence of amphetamine.
There was also an ice pipe and two bags of white crystal substance (1.25g) located.
Graham failed to attend court twice and forensic evidence also linked him to the theft of fuel in Terang during September.
In late December the Corangamite landfill site at Naroghid was broken into and a calico bag containing $2000 stolen.
The site was then burgled another three times with $1528 and keys taken.
On January 10 a number of bank cards were stolen from a Toyota in Camperdown which were then used at Corangamite ATMs a number of times over following days to withdraw $8500 as well as buy a vacuum cleaner and carpet cleaner valued at $778.
On February 8 Warrnambool police noticed a red Hyundai creeping through a red light at the intersection of Raglan Parade and Banyan Street.
The car was carrying false plates and when police tried to intercept it, the driver sped off reaching an estimated 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.
Graham tried to overtake another car on the left-hand side at in excess of 100km/h and his driver's licence was suspended at the time.
Then there were six break-ins and attempted burglaries in Camperdown and Terang, some of which involved an offender wearing bright red shoes.
Graham initially told police he was in Queensland at time of most of the offending, although he admitted it was him in security camera footage wearing the red shoes.
