The college’s intermediate boys, intermediate girls and senior boys won through at a Warrnambool school sport day on Wednesday, competing against students from Emmanuel, Warrnambool and Kings colleges.
Brauer College senior volleyball coach Amanda Bridges said it was the second time in three years the school had three teams advance to the next level.
“Effectively the (school’s volleyball) academy is working and it’s going very well and very strong,” she said.
The school had two intermediate girls teams, who placed top of their respective pools, setting up an all-Brauer showdown in the final.
The intermediate boys defeated Kings College in a tight game, while the senior boys defeated Warrnambool College in two sets.
“The intermediate boys … are vying for states for the third year in a row,” Ms Bridges said.
The students wasted no time preparing for the Greater Western Region finals at Horsham on May 6, beginning training on Thursday.
Emmanuel College’s senior girls team also advanced after winning its section.
Teacher Nick Woodward said the girls gelled well as a team on the day, setting them up for the triumph.
“As a team, they worked extremely well,” he said.
“They supported each other.
“They kept the ball up in the air, they didn’t give away unforced errors.”
The schools also competed in tennis and cricket tournaments on the same day.
Warrnambool College won the intermediate and senior boys’ tennis sections, while Emmanuel College produced the intermediate and senior girls winners.
Warrnambool College sports co-ordinator Sharyn Warren said both boys team won all their matches to progress to the next level.
“With the senior boys, there’s three out of the four that play regularly, and with the intermediate boys there’s two also that play (often outside of school),” she said.
Emmanuel College teacher Carina McCosh said the school’s intermediate boys also made it through to their final, while the boys finished runner-up to Warrnambool College in a round robin, in what was a strong showing from the school.
“They played some really good teams as the kids had a great day,” she said.
“We were happy with how they played and just how well all the students conducted themselves during the day.”
The teams will progress through to the Greater Western Region finals, which will be held at Ballarat on Wednesday.
