Hundreds of drivers were forced to abandon their cars and evacuate Eastlink on Friday after a car caught fire in a tunnel.

Eastlink was closed in both directions for about an hour and a half after the vehicle caught fire in the Melba tunnel around 2pm.
Motorists were forced to leave their cars and escape on foot as smoke filled the tunnel.
Traffic was backed up in both directions with the Melba and Mullum Mullum tunnels closed.
An Eastlink spokeswoman said traffic should be flowing freely by peak hour, when thousands of Melburnians pass through the Mullum Mullum tunnel on their way home for the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the car fire in the Melba Tunnel around 2pm, and motorists had to abandon their cars and evacuate as firefighters brought the blaze under control.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers had been on site directing traffic.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said a team of five firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by around 2.20pm.
It is not yet known how they car caught fire.
