Warrnambool bong thrower gets bail

A WARRNAMBOOL man who allegedly threw a glass bong at a teenage girl has been bailed.

James Porter-Cullen, 21 of McGregors Road Warrnambool, applied for bail in Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday, which the prosecution opposed.

Constable Steven Brady told the court that on September 17, Mr Porter-Cullen allegedly became angry with the victim, his girlfriend of five months, and smashed her mobile phone.

The victim was then allegedly struck across the right side of her face and verbally abused before Mr Porter-Cullen threw a glass bong at her head.

Police issued Mr Porter-Cullen with a family violence safety notice.

On September 18 Mr Porter-Cullen and the victim failed to appear in court and the hearing was adjourned to September 21.

At 5.30pm on September 18, Mr Porter-Cullen allegedly became enraged with the victim because of the jumper she was wearing.

He allegedly  attempted to choke her before his friends intervened.

He then threatened to smash a glass bong on her head.

He was arrested and allegedly made a call to his grandmother from the police station stating that he would kill the victim.

The court heard the victim did not oppose the bail application and she wanted to be friends with Mr Porter-Cullen.

Mr Porter-Cullen, who has a history of drug and driving offences, was bailed on conditions that he live with his step-mother, attend alcohol and drug counselling and not commit family violence.

He was ordered to re-appear at court on October 29 for a contest mention.
