Thompson freely gives his time to community service

ROGER Thompson is the 2012 Southern Grampians Shire Senior of the Year.

Mr Thompson was yesterday presented with his award at the Victorian Seniors Festival variety concert in Hamilton in recognition of his extensive voluntary community service.

Mr Thompson is an active member of the Lions Club and has been awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Lions’ highest award. He has also served on the Lions District Cabinet in various positions.

Mr Thompson is also a volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul shop in Hamilton and a member of the Southern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music Committee.

His other contributions to the community include organising ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ in Hamilton, taking part in the ‘Murray to Moyne’ bike ride that raises money for community organisations, and being a member of the Hamilton Singers.

Mr Thompson also plays cricket for the Southern Grampians Cricket Club where he gives training and guidance to young members.

The Hamilton Uniting Church has benefited from his service in a number of roles including church councillor, involvement with the church’s Triennial Stewardship Program, running a youth group, distributing meals for the needy and singing in the church choir.

His nomination for the award said Mr Thompson had “a positive attitude towards ageing, approached everything in life with a smile and inspired and mentored others”.
