“At the showgrounds, we had four tables, not eight (like we do now),” he said.
“It made a big difference. We probably doubled our numbers at the time to about a hundred.”
Within a couple of years of opening, the association had grown to the extent it had 90 children playing on a Saturday morning.
In 2016, WTTA is preparing to mark the 50th anniversary of the official opening on March 19 with a tournament, followed by a reunion dinner afterwards.
WTTA president Mark Taylor encouraged anyone involved over the years to get in touch with the club to join in the celebrations.
“We’ve had a lot of things happen over the last 50 years,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of achievements, a lot of great players and a lot of great teams.”
