Warrnambool’s newest penguin protection Marrema has arrived in the city and is in training to move onto Middle Island in the coming year.
Tourism services manager Peter Abbott said the pup was getting to know his handlers and had already been working with the chickens at Flagstaff Hill.
He’s the first of two new pups that have been bought with $25,000 raised through a crowd sourcing campaign and will allow the existing guardian dogs, Eudy and Tula, to become ambassadors.
“The community owns these pups, we had 400 people make donations during our crowd sourcing campaign,” he said.
“People can go the Warrnambool penguins website to have their say. The names will then be short-listed for a final vote.
“Some of the staff have suggested he should be called Fuzzball, another suggestion was Kevin.”
Mr Abbott said the pup will not be on public display for a while, as he goes through the training process and bonds with his new handlers.
