With just one round of the home-and-away season to go, City Memorial Red is on 176 points, one clear of Koroit Blue in third. Warrnambool Gold (184) looks to have top spot in its keeping.
On Saturday, City Memorial Red had a comfortable 111-64 win at its home green over Timboon Gold.
Even more importantly, the home team won all four rinks, a task it will be aiming to repeat in the final round against Warrnambool Blue.
If it can achieve that goal then it will keep second place and the finals double chance.
City Memorial Red player Kevin McMahon said his team is clear about what it needs to do.
“Everyone is really focused, if you aren’t at this time of year I don’t think you ever will be,” McMahon said.
“What we are doing now is thinking finals and playing like we know we have to in finals.
“If you are off your game and don’t produce your best in finals then you will be in trouble so our mindset is to be at our best.
“We now have a really good spread, everyone is contributing and playing well. Obviously we have a lot of finals experience and that certainly does help with preparation as the stakes get higher.”
Koroit Blue kept itself within striking range of the top two should City Memorial Red stumble with a big win over Warrnambool White. A 30-7 win to Scott Boschen’s rink was the highlight of the day as Koroit Blue ran away with a 131-58 victory.
Warrnambool Gold also pinned its ears back with a dominant performance against Warrnambool Blue. The competition powerhouse showed no mercy to its club mate with a comprehensive 121-54 win.
Mortlake Blue’s outside chance of a finals appearance has disappeared after a loss to Dennington Red.
On its home green, Mortlake Blue won just one rink, losing two and drawing the other.
The 94-84 win takes Dennington Red to 100 points for the season and elevates it from ninth to seventh place on the ladder.
Terang Green has confirmed its finals place with a 112-69 win over Lawn Tennis Red. It was a clean sweep for Terang Green with all four rinks going its way.
Port Fairy Red is staking its claim as the best side outside the finals, a 102-69 win over City Memorial Gold on Saturday the latest step towards that ambition. It was a strong display at home for Port Fairy Red, winning three of the four rinks up for grabs. Port Fairy Red is on 110 points, five behind fifth-placed Mortlake Blue.
