The women’s semi-finals in the morning went to Koroit champion Kellie Bowles over Carol Cardwell from Terang, and Warrnambool champion Gillian Vorwerk over Noelene Richards from Timboon.
In a quality final, Vorwerk had an early lead but Bowles dominated the last few ends to take the title 25-12.
The many spectators were privileged to watch an outstanding men’s final over three and a half hours and 36 ends.
Warrnambool champion Kevin Boyd showed the class that has taken him to state championship level in the past, and matched current City Memorial champion and defending state champion David Wells throughout a contest that could have gone either way. Wells won 25-24.
Champions move on to play for the West Coast Bowls Region championships over the next three Sundays.
This Sunday the action is scheduled at Camperdown for men’s and women’s singles and fours champions.
Pennant moved into the last four rounds last Saturday and pennant rule 15, designed to limit undue movement of stronger players into lower sides, came into effect.
Selectors need to check their records carefully. Last Saturday both Warrnambool Blue and Lawn Tennis Blue lost points because they did not realise they had selected four players who had played a majority of their games this season in higher sides.
A WDBD general meeting for club delegates is to be held on February 16.
Possible changes can be brought up at this meeting, to go back to clubs for discussion and advice before the annual meeting in May.
Match committee members will suggest that we move pennant forward to use the usually good weather in March and early April. A later start could allow many of the championship events to be played in October, and release some Sundays for club events.
The WDBD commitment to a stable structure for Saturday pennant for three years finishes at the end of next season. The board will recommend that next season is used for a major review using a working party of club representatives.
Dennington B grade singles winners were Rex Harris over Kevin Butler and Connie Konigson over Olive McKenzie. At City Memorial, the ladies’ fours winners were Joan Stevenson, Bev Wallace, Maureen O’Brien and Moira Cooknell. From Timboon, June Hallyburton and Arthur Finch were runners-up to Noelene Richards and Matt Haugh in its club championships. Greg Creek won Port Fairy B grade singles title.
