EXACTLY 140 years ago today the first Warrnambool Standard hit the streets as a four-page bi-weekly publication.
It withstood the test of time and is now an integral part of south-west Victorian community life, evolving with the challenges of the electronic media age.

When Henry Laurie and William Fairfax nervously launched their publication on October 1, 1872, Warrnambool’s population was only about 5000, with another 9000 or so in the adjacent rural shires.
Less than 12 years later it became a daily and has continued to expand.
Now there are 34,000 people in Warrnambool plus a regional population of more than 50,000. To celebrate the milestone a free exhibition featuring a snapshot of how The Standard grew is running at Warrnambool Art Gallery until November.
The interactive display also features artefacts from local collections, historic footage and a slide show of photographs.
