The league was left in limbo after Loddon Valley withdrew from the AFL Victoria Community Championship match.
WDFNL president Barry Crimmin said the league executive looked at its options at a meeting on Wednesday.
“We had a discussion (Wednesday) night that we’re very keen to continue on the interleague path,” he said.
Crimmin said the league would have discussions with AFL Victoria later this month to gauge the possibility of moving the match, originally scheduled for Warrnambool in May, to Loddon Valley’s arena.
“We had plans of having a double-header with the Hampden league ... but that’s definitely not going to go ahead,” he said.
Loddon Valley league chair Colleen Rogers said the decision to withdraw from the championships had not been made lightly, but a high volume of away fixtures prompted the decision.
“If we played this year, in seven years it would be five (away games),” she said.
“When you’re travelling, the costs go up. We went to the clubs and asked their opinion, and that was the result.
“We’re disappointed and we prefer to be part of the championships.”
Darcy Lewis, who co-coached with Karl Dwyer last season, had been appointed coach of the 2016 WDFNL side.
