Twelve months after Brock claimed the Australian title, younger brother Todd has also taken out the top race – becoming the youngest ever winner in the process.
The 12-year-old Hamilton local was second across the line, but was elevated to first place following the disqualification of two of the top five finishers, which also saw Brock rise from equal fourth to third.
“It was the first time for two brothers to finish on the podium (in the junior sedans Australian title),” Todd said.
The previous youngest winner of the Australian title was another Todd – Todd Waddell – who was fifteen when he won his first title.
Now that he will carry the title of Australia 1, the younger Atkins sibling – whose car engine was built in Warrnambool – said he was wary of the weight of expectation after rising to the peak in his first season competing in junior sedans A.
“At this age, it feels really awkward,” Todd said.
“It’s almost like people are going to expect more from me in years to come.”
Nevertheless, sheer elation was the overriding feeling following Todd’s efforts in the race, which he celebrated with his family.
Todd started from eighth spot in the final and moved his way up through the field, while defending champion Brock ran a dead-heat for fourth after starting from 11th position.
“He drove a really good race and unfortunately was put back two spots when he tried to make a pass on another car,” Todd said.
“I just tried to keep consistent, keep it on the bottom of the track and wait for people to stuff up and make a pass.”
Todd had moved to third position by lap 12 of the 25-lap feature, and was second by lap 14, putting some space between him and the chasing pack. He maintained his position to the finish.
Todd, who has been racing junior sedans for a year-and-a-half, said 17-year-old Brock had helped him prepare for the titles, which were held at Tasmania’s Carrick Speedway on Saturday night.
“He gave me a bit of advice, but he was happy to hand it (the title) over to me,” Todd said.
Todd and Brock’s father Greg said the family was thrilled to have both boys claim the title of Australia 1.
“It’s not very often that you get two boys in one family that can say they both won the Australian title,” he said.
“We’re very, very proud of both of them.”
The brothers will now turn their attentions to the Tasmanian junior sedans state title, which will be held at Latrobe Speedway this Saturday.
